WELCOME TO THE WAR

The brilliance of a battalion of fireflies
camped in his gaze
while he counted the mirages
that writhed before dying
between shrapnel and despair

Now that the numbers
were only useful for the countdowns
or to subtract wishes
That his will traveled
on the surface of other rivers
with another’s whim
He understood that it was no longer possible
to separate what is necessary
from what is correct
nor to challenge love for survival

Now that the tears
were dying in his heart
and that the terror had refuged
in the trenches of resignation
hoping to anesthetize reality
was that he understood
that at the end of the movie
his name would not appear in the credits
nor would anyone care to remember it
